Dr. Gary Winston’s career that has taken him through the academic ranks to a six year run as Chief Toxicologist to the Israel Ministry of Health. After his undergraduate studies at University of Florida, Dr. Winston taught high school biology for ten years, during which time he earned a Masters Degree from Florida Atlantic University in Human Behavior. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno in Biochemistry, followed by post-doctoral study at Washington State University in Pullman and later at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Dr. Winston went on to the Institute of Environmental Studies and the Department of Biochemistry at Louisiana State University, where he worked his way through the ranks to Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry. At LSU he created a research niche in aquatic and marine toxicology and was one of the first to study oxidative stress as a general response to chemical pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, and to develop and employ biomarkers of exposure and effect to contaminants in aquatic organisms. In 2001, while serving as Head of the Department of Toxicology at North Carolina State University, he was nominated to fill a vacancy as Chief Toxicologist in the Israel Ministry of Health, a position which he held until 2007. In that position Winston was involved in oversight of ground and surface water supplies, and adoption and regulation of Israeli drinking water standards, among other tasks.

Since June 1, 2007, Dr. Winston assumed the post of Director of the National Center for Water Quality Research at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. This position enables him to reconcile the science of water quality with human health at the watershed scale.
