Dr. Nicholas Ashbolt, an environmental microbiologist and international authority on environmental pathogens, has taken his research interests on the fate and transport of pathogens through to a systems-level development of quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA), as one of five key criteria in urban water sustainability assessments. Previously Head of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Dr. Ashbolt accepted a position as Title 42 Senior Research Microbiologist with the National Exposure Research Laboratory, U.S. EPA Cincinnati in January 2007. Over the last 10 years he has worked in joint Australian-Sweden and European programs further developing QMRA methods and their applications to water management. This work has contributed to the risk-based approach adopted in the most recent WHO recreational, drinking water and reuse guidelines. He has published 27 book chapters, 105 journal papers and over 100 conference proceedings since he joined UNSW in 1994.
